DeClutter, Organize & Sell Your STUFF!

Jean Back of Survival Essentials will present two FREE* workshops, at the Haverford Township Free Library. Are you overwhelmed by clutter? Has your garage or basement become a dumping ground? Are you are in the process of down-sizing? Have you just cleaned out a relative’s house and are wondering what in the world to keep or give away?

Jean Back has been in the “getting organized” business for 30 years, helping people unclutter a closet, improve a filing system for a home based business, and even move to a new location.

Come to one or both of Jean’s workshops and learn great tips on how you can declutter and organize your house.

Wednesday evening, May 27, 6:30-8:00 pm, Library Community Room
Wednesday evening, June 3, 6:30-8:00 pm, Library Community Room

These workshops are FREE! However . . .

*We ask YOU to reach into your closet and make a difference to the needy of Delaware County Bring something to donate to the
Life Center in Upper Darby—a toiletry item, a roll of paper towels, toilet paper or soap. Go to the list on their website for a more complete list.

Congressman Joe Sestak

Congressman Joe Sestak with Havertown Center Member Bill Boyle.

Monday, March 16, Congressman Joe Sestak stopped by to chat with Havertown Center members during lunch. Serving his second term as the Representative from Pennsylvania's 7th Congressional District, Sestak spoke in detail about funding the current financial crunch we all feel. Members shared their concerns and asked great questions and Congressman Sestak responded with thoughtful and informative answers.

Here are some facts provided by the Pennsylvania Association of Senior Centers (PASC):
  • 15.3% of PA’s population is 65+ ranking the State 3rd, behind only Florida and West Virginia, in the number of older adult residents (2000 US Census).
  • People are living and working longer. In 2011, only 2 years from now, the older “Boomers” turn 65 and on average can be expected to live to age 83 or beyond.
  • Senior centers contribute to cost savings in long term living and health care by promoting healthy lifestyles, providing access to social services and combating isolation through keeping older adults actively engaged in their communities.
  • Pennsylvania provides base support for senior center programs, but not for the full operating expenses, new initiatives or capital expenses.
  • Collaborations, grants and fundraising activities alone are unable to support the growing need for community-based older adult programs and services.

Thanks, Congressman Sestak, for listening to the concerns of Havertown Center's older adults!

Please Do One Thing...

Roll up the Rug!
Annual Campaign 2009
You’ve seen the Center looking better and brighter over the past year. Community volunteers painted most of our rooms and all of our doors and trim. Donations brought us 6 new computers in the Tech Lab. Funds from the Department of Aging paid for our bright new signs. We squeezed money out of the MCSS budget for new tables in the lab and the new, lightweight lunchroom tables. All of which helped make us sparkle for our on-site Accreditation visit.

But now, when you look around at the center today, the old carpeting really stands out. And not in a good way!! As much as we’ve cleaned it, stains left by years of use won’t come out. There are safety problems too, as the carpet unravels at the seams and has to be taped down. And with your help, that carpeting can be replaced!

This year’s Havertown Center Annual Campaign is raising money to Roll up the Rug and begin putting new, safe and beautiful carpeting in the center. Your Annual Campaign donation of $25, or whatever is comfortable for you, will make it possible to Roll up the Rug and put down some beautiful new carpeting.

Like most of us, you are probably feeling that this is a time to spend and invest carefully. Havertown Center is a great long term investment in your future! You find so much here at the Center, from health and wellness programs to art to computers and more. But, it’s the friendship and fellowship that make the Center special. And that is what will help us get through these hard economic times. If we all pitch in, contribute what we can, and work together, we will keep the center strong – and have safe, beautiful new carpets.

Re-carpeting the Center will happen in phases. As a community of members, family and local friends, we can raise the money that we need to get started now.

Please do one thing...help the Center put its best foot forward and please make your Annual Campaign donation of $25, or whatever amount works for you, today. Your donation to the campaign will combine with others to reach the goal, and then we’ll Roll Up the Rug!!

Make your gift by Friday, March 27 and you’ll be eligible for the Annual Campaign raffle to be drawn on March 31st.

We Are Accredited!

Havertown Center
is now a Nationally Accredited Senior Center!

It’s official—we have been awarded accreditation from the National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC), a unit of the National Council on Aging (NCOA). Accreditation is the official recognition that a senior center is meeting its mission in a nationally accepted professional fashion and in compliance with the nine standards of senior center operations. Accreditation is the official mark of excellence.

It was wonderful hearing all that Havertown Center means to everyone. As staff, we all feel such pride in Havertown Center, recognizing how the Center is truly you, the members. Now it’s official and we need to find just the right place of honor for our NISC Senior Center Accreditation plaque.

P.S. - Congratulations to Hometown Center in Media (our sister MCSS senior center) for being awarded National Accrreditation too!
